When the tomato crop was ravaged in 2016-2017, leaving many farmers in debt, the GiZ-funded Green Innovation Centre Project came to this area. The project conducted research on the tomato value chain in the area and identified the primary underlying cause of the problem. Farmers were spending too much money on input costs to manage viruses without knowing whether their seedlings were virus-infected or not when they purchased seedlings from nurseries. Furthermore, there were numerous soil problems, and farmers relied primarily on local input dealers and input firm suppliers for assistance, which was frequently focused on the upper surface rather than the core cause of the problem.
In a word, the farmer spent a lot of money that was not always necessary. As a result, the GIC project focused on all stakeholders in the tomato value chain, from seedling growers to the market.
The GIC project formed farmer study groups in each village and trained them on technical aspects of their problems from experts, as well as facilitating bulk purchasing and group savings. Farmers had lower input costs at the end of the year when compared to non-group farmers because of proper crop practices and timely crop information. The farmer group recognized the significance of being together. To spread good agricultural practices and technology, the GIC project facilitates farm experiments, farmer exposure visits, and field days.
Ten Farmer Study Groups come forward to form Farmer Producer Company to expand this activity to a larger number of farmers after understanding work in the group and solving their own problem by working together. To help FSG understand the concept of FPO, the GIC project organized an exposure visit and expert seminars.
Farmers nominated a board of directors from the Farmer Study Group who are well educated, know about agriculture, and can lead the Farmer Study Group.
On the 16th of January 2019, farmer groups established the Krushinavakalpana Farmer Producer Company ltd in Naryangon, Pune District.
Today, Krushinavakalpana Famer Producer Company is working on increasing farm productivity and developing a platform where farmers can sell their agri goods to market.
Krushinavakalpana Farmer Producer Company was nominated in the Producer Development Fund project funded by NABARD and implemented by KVK Narayangaon in the year 2021. For three years, the project provided assistance in producer activities.
